Welcome to JBAB
Congratulations on your assignment to Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB). This is an extraordinary time to be joining our team, and we're excited to have you and your family here!
Your orders likely show your gaining unit as JBAB AFELM EL FF0LV1, which is the 11th Wing – “The Chief’s Own” – operating on the Navy-run installation. However, there are some big changes scheduled to occur in the next year and beyond. Here is a brief generalization of what’s been happening over the last year:
In May 2019, the Air Force and Navy Service Secretaries signed a memorandum directing the transfer of JBAB lead service responsibility from the Navy to the Air Force. A joint team then drafted an extensive Memorandum of Agreement detailing how we would transfer and align resources to fulfill those joint base mission requirements. On June 12, 2020, the 11th Wing was re-activated and Col Mike "Goose" Zuhlsdorf took command of “The Chief’s Own."
So what does this mean for you? You will be an Airman assigned to an Air Force unit that has not yet been fully activated on a Navy-run base until the Air Force takes full resourcing ownership on 1 Oct 20. You’ll be helping those organizations build the foundational unit processes that each of us is familiar with in our respective squadrons. We fully anticipate there will be challenges, but we also believe there will be some great opportunities to create a premier wing with a focus on Readiness, Partnerships, and Heritage. Here are a few guiding principles, specifically between the June and October timeframe. Regardless of your career field, background, or career aspirations, we need you fully engaged. There will undoubtedly be challenges, but we are very optimistic that together we will solve those challenges with a vision of increasing the readiness of this important power projection platform within the National Capital Region. You can jump right in and start to build positive relationships with your Navy counterparts, many of whom will continue to be your teammates after the transition. Do everything in your power to set your functional areas up for success, as you will be laying the groundwork for what we fully expect will be the best wing and installation in our U.S. Air Force.
We look forward to meeting you and learning more about you as we bring Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling into the future.
