Graves Cater: finding a family

Long past his bedtime, a young boy lost in his own world plays on his computer. He didn’t have much and lived in a low-income neighborhood in Kansas City, but was happy with what he did have. There is a knock on the door. His three older siblings walk into the room, their heads down and quiet. “Mom died,” said the oldest sister. The child looks up from the computer not fully understanding until everyone in the room starts to cry. His mother is never coming home.

11SFS fosters renewed sense of community on JBAB

Entering into a new fiscal year, there are plenty of changes on the horizon for JBAB, some of which have already taken effect. On Oct. 1, the Air Force officially became the lead service of Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, taking over from the Navy after 10 years. The switch marks the first time any joint base transferred control.

Keeping JBAB Clean

It’s a cool, crisp morning at the park, as an Airman starts her day strolling the base. Her shoes aren’t ideal for her walk and last night’s rain has her feet soaked. It doesn’t bother her and will not stop her. With gloves on her hands and a big black trash bag, she begins her mission. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ashley Keeks, AF Band premier vocalist, is one of 23 volunteers that gathered at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington D.C., on Oct. 13, 2020, to pick up garbage and fallen branches.

Air Force takes responsibility of JBAB

After more than 17 months of planning, a historical moment took place on Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling on Oct. 1, 2020. Marked by a special ceremony, the Air Force officially took responsibility of JBAB, which was led by the Navy for the past 10 years. This is the first time in Department of Defense history that a joint installation switched direct responsibility from one branch of service to another.

Keeping your workplace safe from fire

To prevent your workplace from catching fire, whether that is your desk or on a ship, here are a few safety tips from The Naval District of Washington Emergency Services to prevent a potential fire from starting, and how to minimize damage if one does start. Extension cords and surge protectors are helpful when needing to plug in more equipment, but when used improperly they can start an electrical fire. When using an extension cord, be sure not to use it for more than eight to 12 hours, or to transfer power from one area to another. Surge protectors can be used for computers, printers and monitors, but should not be used with other surge protectors and extension cords.

JBAB, 11th Operations Group NCO named Air Force Outstanding Airman of the Year

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Portia Short, 11th Operations Group United States Air Force Honor Guard ceremonial guardsman, was selected for one of the Air Force’s biggest honors. She earned recognition as one of the 12 Outstanding Airmen of the Year (OAY) for 2020. Every year an Air Force selection board considers nominees for the OAY award who demonstrate superior leadership, job performance and personal achievements. The Airman must earn the annual award at all subordinate unit tiers starting at the squadron level. If earned at the group, wing and major command levels, they then move on to compete at the Air Force level.

Meet Deuce: A leader born and raised to serve

One of the more common questions service members are asked is, “Why do you serve?” Some answer because of patriotism and for the love of the United States of America. Some answer because of opportunity, college or travel. For Col. Erica Rabe, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling and 11th Wing vice commander, the answer lies in a long family lineage of service members and a community that surrounded her family before, during and after her father's battle with cancer.
