JBAB reduces health protection condition to BRAVO, plans to reopen some services

Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling is decreasing the Health Protection Condition for the installation from CHARLIE to BRAVO effective June 29.

The installation commander, in coordination with the Naval District of Washington’s Commandant, NDW’s Public Health Emergency Officer and JBAB’s Military Medical Treatment Facility, has determined the base has met the criteria to take this action. The gating criteria for this decision is consistent with the President’s reopening guidelines.  The data-driven criteria includes daily monitoring of the trajectory of influenza-like or COVID-like illness cases on the base, evaluating documented COVID-19 cases over a 14-day period, ensuring capacity exists in either military or local medical facilities to treat all patients without crisis care, and ensuring appropriate testing programs are place.

“From the very beginning of this global challenge, I’m grateful our JBAB Team has responded so diligently in taking immediate action to protect our force and their families,” said Col. Mike Zuhlsdorf, JBAB and 11th Wing commander. “While this marks a significant milestone towards getting back to ‘normal,’ I encourage everyone to continue following the strict protection guidelines that remain in place. The fight against this pandemic continues, and we are all in this together – to protect ourselves, our families and teammates, and preserve our national security capabilities.”

JBAB will continue to follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Defense, and Department of the Navy guidance to monitor and limit the spread of COVID-19 while implementing changes to transition to lower HPCON levels.

To lower the risk to the JBAB Team, many facilities on the installation have been closed for more than two months. Some JBAB facilities will reopen as they are determined to be able to do so safely. All facilities and services that reopen will still need to adhere to social distancing guidelines and other procedures to help ensure the well-being of all patrons.

A current list of JBAB services and hours is included here.

“Adjusting the HPCON and reopening some services in a limited capacity are initial steps in the ongoing efforts to recover from this pandemic,” Colonel Zuhlsdorf said. “We continue to evaluate what areas on the base we may consider opening next, to include within our housing areas and other community service locations. However, these decisions will always be prioritized with an eye on how to best ensure the health and welfare of our team.”

The situation will continue to be monitored, and adjustments to services and the HPCON plan will be made as necessary.

The Team JBAB community is encouraged to visit the installation Facebook page and associated website for updated information as it becomes available.
