National Medal of the Arts
December 14, 2020
— At a special ceremony at the Pentagon Wednesday, December 2, 2020, Colonel Don Schofield, Commander and Conductor of the United States Air Force Band, accepted the National Medal of Arts on behalf of all Air Force band members, past and present, from both active duty and the Air National Guard. The award was presented by Secretary of the Air Force Barbara Barrett and Chief of Staff of the Air Force General Charles Q. Brown. In 2019, President Donald J. Trump awarded the National Medal of Arts to the musicians of the United States Military “for personifying excellence in music and service to country. From concert halls to war zones, these extraordinary patriots have inspired and uplifted their fellow Americans over generations with their incredible courage and breathtaking musical talent.” On Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the White House, Army Staff Sergeant Jan Knutson, a guitarist who is a member of The U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” accepted the award from President Trump on behalf of all military musicians. ...

JBAB Goes Virtual for Annual Tree Lighting
December 4, 2020
— As with everything in 2020, Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling’s Tree Lighting Ceremony was a little different this year. Even amidst the challenges of current COVID-19 restrictions, the 11th Wing was still able to share its holiday spirit with a virtual offering. As a tribute to military tradition, those in attendance stood reverently as retreat sounded to signify the end of the work day. After a brief moment of silence, the stillness was broken by festive music performed by the Ceremonial Brass Quintet from The United States Air Force Band. ...

Graves Cater: finding a family
November 4, 2020
— Long past his bedtime, a young boy lost in his own world plays on his computer. He didn’t have much and lived in a low-income neighborhood in Kansas City, but was happy with what he did have. There is a knock on the door. His three older siblings walk into the room, their heads down and quiet. “Mom died,” said the oldest sister. The child looks up from the computer not fully understanding until everyone in the room starts to cry. His mother is never coming home...

Keeping JBAB Clean
October 21, 2020
— It’s a cool, crisp morning at the park, as an Airman starts her day strolling the base. Her shoes aren’t ideal for her walk and last night’s rain has her feet soaked. It doesn’t bother her and will not stop her. With gloves on her hands and a big black trash bag, she begins her mission. U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Ashley Keeks, AF Band premier vocalist, is one of 23 volunteers that gathered at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling, Washington D.C., on Oct. 13, 2020, to pick up garbage and fallen branches. ...

Keeping your workplace safe from fire
September 2, 2020
— To prevent your workplace from catching fire, whether that is your desk or on a ship, here are a few safety tips from The Naval District of Washington Emergency Services to prevent a potential fire from starting, and how to minimize damage if one does start. Extension cords and surge protectors are helpful when needing to plug in more equipment, but when used improperly they can start an electrical fire. When using an extension cord, be sure not to use it for more than eight to 12 hours, or to transfer power from one area to another. Surge protectors can be used for computers, printers and monitors, but should not be used with other surge protectors and extension cords...
